How does this work?
Sign up for membership using the month-to-month, 6-month, or 12-month options. Once you become a member, you will have immediate access to telehealth or clinic-based visits with our healthcare providers.
Who is NIU HEALTH for?
NIU HEALTH is for Hawaii residents who are looking for high quality, inexpensive, and convenient access to healthcare.
What devices can be used to access this service?
All devices such as a computer, electronic pad, or smartphone that contain an internet connection can be used to access telehealth services. You must have an operating camera on these devices in order to use the telehealth services. Prior to the telehealth consultation, you will be prompted to allow access to your device’s camera and audio functions. Allowing access to your device's camera and audio is required to successfully use the telehealth services.
Are your healthcare providers based in Hawaii?
Yes, all of our healthcare professionals live in Hawaii and are licensed to practice medically in the state. NIU HEALTH engages physicians, advanced practice registered nurses, and physician assistants who are licensed and qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage general medical conditions.
May I choose which healthcare provider to see?
What makes NIU HEALTH unique is that you have convenient access usually within 5 to 15 minutes to a healthcare professional when you need them. For this reason, our online systems do not permit members to select a preferred healthcare provider.
If I am a Hawaii resident traveling to other parts of the world, can I use the service?
Yes, once you become a member, access NIU HEALTH from anywhere or anytime in the world as long as you have internet connectivity.
Is my information still protected under the HIPAA privacy rules?
Yes, NIU HEALTH ensures that your health information is secured and protected.
Is NIU HEALTH able to treat my existing chronic medical conditions?
Yes, our healthcare providers are capable of working with you to help manage chronic medical conditions. Furthermore, we encourage collaboration with your existing healthcare teams such as your primary care providers or medical specialist to optimally treat your medical condition(s).
Will my primary care provider have access to my medical records with NIU HEALTH?
With your consent, your existing primary health care provider may have access to your health records.
Who can become a member of NIU HEALTH?
Currently, we are serving people who are residents of the State of Hawaii.
I'm a Hawaii resident, but my ID is from another state or country. How can I prove I'm a resident?
We are only accepting members who have a Hawaii state ID, Hawaii State Driver's license, or a copy of a utility bill as proof of residency.
Do I need to be a member to access online content on NIU HEALTH’s website?
No, you may create a free account to join our community and browse the website to enjoy viewing content on health-related topics such as wellness, physical activities, and nutrition.
What does my membership include?
If you sign up and subscribe to one of our low monthly care plans you will receive 24/7 online and clinic-based care that will allow you to virtually speak to a health care provider at your convenience. Your membership also includes access to prescription drugs and laboratory testing at a very low cost to you.
Are prescription drugs and laboratory tests included in the monthly subscription cost?
No, Although your monthly subscription cost provides you with exclusive online and clinic-based (health hubs) care, we offer prescription medication and laboratory tests at a low cost. If you don’t have drug coverage with your existing health insurance plan or don’t have health insurance, your monthly membership gives you access to a variety of common prescription drugs at a much lower cost, most are under $5. Some of the medications we offer are used to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, infections, heart disease, lung disease, and sexual health.
If I purchase prescription medication from NIU HEALTH, how will I get my medication?
When prescribed by our healthcare providers, members can purchase discounted medications that will be placed in a QR coded lockbox at a Health Hub nearest you, that will be ready for you to pick up. After your online consultation with a NIU Healthcare provider, you will need to reserve a date and time to pick up your medication. You will be asked to enter in your credit or debit card location. Medications should be picked up from the lockbox within 1 hour from your reserved date and time. otherwise, it will be returned to stock and you may be billed for a restocking fee ($0.99).
Your credit or debit card on file will be charged once you pick up your medication. Federal laws prohibit the return of prescription medication(s), therefore once you remove the medication from the lockbox you may not return the purchased medication(s). Unfortunately, NIU HEALTH does not do mail prescriptions at this time.
May I get my prescriptions from a pharmacy other than from NIU HEALTH?
Absolutely, if your current medical insurance plan offers you drug coverage, or it's a medication we don’t carry in-stock, our providers are willing to submit your prescription to your preferred pharmacy.
May I just purchase medication that I have been prescribed by my primary care provider without being a member?
NIU HEALTH is not a commercial or retail pharmacy, NIU HEALTH’s licensed drug dispensary which offers medications that are prescribed to our members by our healthcare providers that allow ourmembers to purchase prescription drugs at a low-cost from our drug dispensary.
Does my subscription qualify as a medical expense using my TASC card?
Flex-spending is a great benefit to have when covering medical-related expenses, however, we suggest you check with the company that mandates your TASC card to see if transactions made to NIU HEALTH are qualified as a medical expense under your TASC card agreements.
Can I cancel my membership?
Yes, you may cancel your membership at any time. If you signed up for a 6 or 12-month membership plan you will be billed the full price of the 6 or 12 months subscription and will have continued access to the membership benefits until the subscription expiration date.
What are the Health Hubs?
Health hubs are health clinics located throughout the island. Medical care services such as physical exams, simple wound care, laboratory testing, and medication dispensing are provided to you within the Health Hub.
How may I access a Health Hub? Can I walk into a Health Hub without an appointment?
The health hubs are not designed as a walk-in clinic, therefore member access to the health hubs requires an online visit through our website, www.niuhealth.com. When you visit our healthcare provider through a telehealth visit, he or she may direct you to a health hub near you for continued medical care that may be needed beyond the virtual setting. You will be given a unique code that will grant you access to the health hub where our professional staff will greet you and you will receive the continued medical care you need. If you go to a Health Hub unexpectedly, someone would be happy to assist you.
Where can I find a Health Hub?
Whether you need to visit our Health Hubs during the day or in the middle of the night, with safety in mind, we currently have two Health Hubs located in Hawaii Kai and Ala Moana. Our Hawaii Kai location is in the Hawaii Kai Towne Center next to Roy’s Restaurant and Hawaii Kai Police station. The Ala Moana location is in the Ala Moana Shopping Center, Mall level next door to the new Giorgio Armani store. These locations have parking. At our landing page we have google maps for both locations.
What if I need to go to a hospital?
If you feel that your condition is an emergency, we recommend you calling 9-1-1, or going to the nearest emergency room.
Do you treat work-related injuries?
No, NIU HEALTH does not accept workers’ compensation insurance.
What if I have an injury or illness that may need advanced diagnostic testings such as an X-ray, CT scan, or ultrasound?
Currently, NIU HEALTH does not offer advanced diagnostic tests, however just like your primary care provider would, we may refer you to an imaging center capable of performing these tests. Your membership does not cover the cost of these tests, therefore you’d be able to use your health insurance to supplement the cost. For members who do not currently carry health insurance, we’ve developed a working relationship with imaging centers that are willing to offer our members discounted prices on these tests.
Does NIU HEALTH accept my health insurance?
NIU HEALTH is not a participating provider with other health care plans. The good news is that your monthly subscription grants you 24/7 telehealth visits and clinic-based care with our trusted healthcare providers. You may still continue to use your current health coverage plan for other reasons such as visits with your primary care provider, other medical specialists, or hospitalizations.
Can I pay with my bank account or do I need a credit card?
We only accept credit or debit card payments at this time. We accept VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, or AMERICAN EXPRESS cards.
How will I be billed for my monthly subscription?
Upon signing up for a membership, you will be required to submit a credit card number in order to complete your registration.
When will my credit card be charged?
Your credit card will be billed every 30 days for month-to-month plans. For 6 or 12 months plans, your credit or debit card will be charged for the full 6 or 12 months price the day you become a member. Recurrent charges will automatically be billed to your credit or debit card, based on the plan you have selected (every 30 days for monthly, every 6-months, or every 12-months), until you cancel your subscription.
Is there an office co-pay?
There is no co-pay required when using NIU HEALTH.
Will my medical insurance be billed?
NIU HEALTH is a no-insurance healthcare provider. Meaning health insurance is not necessary to access online and clinic-based care. Members will not have their insurance billed by NIU HEALTH. However, in certain situations where an NIU HEALTH practitioner may order diagnostic testing or imaging outside of NIU HEALTH, the organisations that perform the testing or procedures will bill your health insurance.
